HISTORY OF TAG
Established in 1970 by five Midwestern Team Sporting Goods Dealers, Team Athletic Group, Inc. (TAG), formed as the first team sporting goods buying group in the industry. As a group, each member attained the additional buying power needed to outfit athletes of all ages with the most superior equipment available. The group conducted is first group TAG Buying Show. Gathering vendors from all areas of sporting goods industry, the TAG Buying Shows continue today as a biyearly showcase of the latest products and services from all over the world.
To support the group, more sales and marketing strategies were introduced and in 1975, TAG produced its first TAG catalog. By the end of the decade, with its members now totaling 15 dealers, TAG hired a management team to direct the future growth strategies of the buying group.
With its management team in place, the first growth strategy was the development of a member designed and source product under the TAG label. In 1982, the TAG brand was launched with PE equipment, basketballs, baseballs and weight sets. In order to be close to the proximity of the ports accepting this new product, the TAG headquarters moved from Illinois to Eugene, Oregon. Throughout the 80’s, TAG continued to source more branded products and in 1987 developed its first line of football shoulder pads. Today, the group designs and produces a series of shoulder pads and is one of the largest shoulder pad brands in the United States.
With the onset of the 1990’s, TAG once again moved its headquarters. This time to St. Louis, Missouri, an ideal location to provide centralized warehoused and shipping to all points throughout the United States. With is members now over 30 dealers, TAG also formed its first Dealer Committee. Consisting of 10 elected members, the Committee’s responsibility is to provide direction for the group regarding product and marketing strategies. Under this direction, TAG launched its first communications network with the cutting edge inter-dealer email in 1994. By 1998, the TAG web site www.tag-1.com became the latest technological upgrade and provided TAG dealers and their customers’ access to TAG catalogs, tools to locate dealers throughout the country and the ability to review vendors within the network.
TAG became an international buying group with the addition of four Canadian based dealers. Now, TAG had representation in all 50 states of the US and 5 provenses in Canada. In 2003 TAG provided its members with another revolutionary concept. With the formation of a partnership with TAG Team Uniforms, TAG had an exclusive line of custom team uniforms. Located 135 miles from St. Louis, TAG Team Uniforms is a 57,000 square foot facility dedicated to the manufacture of custom uniforms soley for the TAG Dealer Network. Currently, TAG Team Uniforms provides custom uniforms for the sports of football, basketball, baseball, softball, track, volleyball, lacrosse as well as team jackets and travel gear. In its first five years of existence, TAG Uniforms has grown to become one of largest domestic uniform manufacturers in the United State today.
